Highlight of Happy
As I sat down last night and reviewed my social media and blog post plans for the days ahead, I realized one proclamation was missing. As I plan this week to take you through the neighborhood where Michael and I fell in love, as I planned to share all my favorites and more favorites of this magical historic neighborhood, I couldn’t shake what my sister had asked me earlier in the night, this question SHOOK me. She asked, “Emily, what do you think people would think of your life from the captions and photos of your Instagram? Your life is perfect, right?” Truly, SHOOK.
I don’t know why I felt so shocked by the question because I often remind myself that Instagram is a “highlight of happy”, not all the time, but it can be. Instagram does so much good for the world, but it can also make a person feel down right crappy about their own life and that’s what I DON’T want anyone to feel while scrolling my gram.
So for the sake of my future blog posts and social media posts ahead, please know that what I choose to post is intended to spread inspiration and joy, maybe even help a person or two, that’s it. Yes, it all may seem like rainbows and sparkles (and it can be!), but the other half of it all is messy and tough, cried over and prayed upon. Every now and again I will choose to tell the world publicly a struggle or two, but for me, I give that part to God and my close friends and family.
With social media making our every life move a public announcement, we are all on some type of platform, we are all influencing, whether you notice it daily or not. So here’s my promise, I will share what constantly and consistently brings my heart happiness, I will share what I feel will inspire creativity, I will promote self-love always, I will share my downfalls and struggles as I feel comfortable, and I will always tell my truth. At the end of the day we share what we are called to share and every journey is different, so just remember, we are all human beings on the other side of the screen. No one is waking up perfect feeling happy and joyous and oozing perfection daily and if you are, you are the first unicorn I have met! But who really wants to be a unicorn? Walking around with a pointy thing sticking out of your head and always being expected to emit glitter from your body?
No, I’d rather be human, a good human, a kind one! Like my favorite target graphic T shirt says, “Human, Kind. Be both.”
I was going to tell you guys my little proclamation via Instagram stories, but I figured I needed this all to be stuck in stone, right here on my blog as a reminder to be a good human, show more imperfections and keep sharing what I love. That’s the goal!
Highlight of happy is just that, a little piece of one’s happiness, so just remember that every time you scroll the gram and start to doubt your amazing self for one minute, it’s all a highlight.
Tomorrow we will be back to our regularly scheduled program and it involves LOVE. Shocking, right?
